WhatsApp Friendship Score Feature

Makerble · APM

Design a WhatsApp feature that prompts users to keep in touch and shows a Friendship Score, via lo-fi wireframes, database changes and a 5-minute video.

Makerble® - Junior Product Manager - Pre-interview task

Makerble is a powerful platform with a wide variety of features. When we have ideas for new features, it is important that we ensure that they connect to the existing features. As a Junior Product Manager at Makerble, you will be coming up with ideas for new features and figuring out how they work alongside the existing features.

This Pre-Interview task is designed to show us your ability to figure out how a new feature would connect to the existing features of a piece of software. This task requires a similar level of imagination, problem solving and attention to detail which will be required for the tasks you'll be working on at Makerble if you were to gain this role. We don't expect you to know how Makerble works in detail at this stage, so for the purpose of the Pre-Interview Task, we are giving you a product to work on which you are hopefully already very familiar with.

Innovation Brief: Imagine that WhatsApp has a problem - the problem is that people aren't using it to communicate with their friends and family as much as they did before. So WhatsApp wants to add a new feature which helps people strengthen their relationship with their loved ones. The new feature needs to prompt users to communicate with their friends and ideally provide users with some kind of Friendship Score for each of their contacts; so that the users get a sense of feedback about the progress they're making to strengthen their relationships with their friends and family.

Your task

  1. Show us how this functionality works by creating low-fidelity wireframes, i.e. they can be black and white (with no colour - just text and boxes to indicate where everything is). Specifically we want you to create a step-by-step example that shows the entire user journey for a user who:
    1. Goes to the main screen of WhatsApp where they see their list of contacts
    2. Goes to the conversation screen of WhatsApp where they see the conversation they are having with a single contact
    3. Goes to any other screens that you invent which are part of this feature
    4. Goes to any other existing screens within WhatsApp which have been updated as a result of your new feature
  2. Explain how the WhatsApp database needs to be expanded with new tables, columns or datasets to include the new information that is necessary for this functionality to work.
  3. Create a 5-minute video using www.loom.com in which you talk through your wireframes and explain how this functionality works to someone who is a developer at WhatsApp so that they can build this functionality. Your ability to be concise is important, hence the 5-minute limit.

We hope you enjoy this task. As you can see from this task, the Junior Product Manager role at Makerble is not focused on your UI skills. We have UI Designers who would take your low-fidelity wireframes and turn them into gorgeous designs which are interactive and enjoyable to use. What you bring to the table is the strategic thinking that figures out how the idea will work in the first place and how it connects to the rest of the software product.
