Design a better airline digital boarding pass
Redesign the end-to-end digital mobile boarding pass and airport day-of-travel experience for modern air travelers.
Context
Current digital boarding passes are static 2D barcodes with cluttered alphanumeric flight codes (e.g. "DL 1422 CLS V SEAT 14B") that fail to guide travelers dynamically through the stress of security, gate changes, and boarding zones.
Clarifying questions to ask first
- Is this inside an airline app or an Apple Wallet / Google Wallet Lock Screen widget?
- How does the app handle offline / dead battery scenarios? (Offline caching + low power BLE beacon sync).
How to approach it
- Analyze the Day-of-Travel Emotional Journey: Pre-Airport Anxiety -> Security Line Friction -> Terminal Navigation & Gate Finding -> Gate Waiting / Boarding Zone Scramble -> In-Flight Settling
- Identify Cluttered Legacy UI Flaws: Critical information (Gate, Boarding Time, Group) buried under marketing loyalty tiers; zero real-time context updates when gates change
- Design a Dynamic Context-Aware Boarding Experience:
- 1. State-Shifting Dynamic UI: Morph display based on airport phase (Shows Security TSA Wait Times -> Morphs to Gate Map -> Morphs to Large High-Brightness Barcode at Gate -> Morphs to Seat Finder & Baggage Carousel upon landing)
- 2. Live Gate Change & Delay Push Alerts with interactive airport indoor navigation map
- 3. Boarding Group Countdown Timer (eliminates crowded gate lice behavior)
- Define success metrics
Framework: User Airport Journey & Stress Points -> Information Hierarchy Audit -> Contextual State Machine UI -> Live Activities / Hardware Integration -> Success Metrics
Sample answer
- A boarding pass should not be a static image; it should be a real-time smart travel assistant that shifts information based on GPS/beacon location inside the terminal
- Visual clarity on Boarding Group, Gate Number, and Seat Row reduces boarding bottlenecks by 20%
- MVP: Live Activities lock-screen pass that shifts through 4 distinct visual states: 1) Transit to airport (terminal/traffic), 2) Security (TSA pre-check badge), 3) Gate (countdown & seat group), 4) Boarding (oversized high-contrast QR code + overhead bin guidance)
Executive design: A dynamic, context-aware boarding pass that morphs across your journey from security wait times to indoor terminal directions and high-contrast gate QR codes.
What interviewers look for
