Estimate number of taxi rides taken globally per day
Estimate the total number of commercial passenger taxi and ride-hailing trips taken globally per day.
Context
Include traditional street-hail taxis, app-based ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft, Didi, Grab, Ola, Bolt), and auto-rickshaws/tuk-tuks.
Clarifying questions to ask first
- Are we including two-wheeler and three-wheeler taxi rides (e.g. Southeast Asia / India)?
- Does this include shared carpooling or strictly single-party taxi hires?
How to approach it
- Top-down by Global Urban Population (~4.5 billion urban residents worldwide)
- Segment by regions: China & East Asia, North America, Europe, India & South Asia, Latin America, Africa
- Estimate daily ride-hail / taxi trip penetration per 1,000 urban residents
- Sanity check against publicly reported Uber (~28M trips/day) and Didi (~30M trips/day) metrics
Framework: Global Daily Taxi Trips = Sum of (Regional Urban Pop × Taxi/Ride-Hail Trips per Capita per Day)
Sample answer
- China (Didi + taxis): ~50M trips/day
- India & SE Asia (Ola, Grab, auto-rickshaws, bikes): ~35M trips/day
- North America (Uber, Lyft, yellow cabs): ~15M trips/day
- Europe (FreeNow, Bolt, traditional taxis): ~15M trips/day
- LatAm & Rest of World: ~20M trips/day
- Total Global Daily Trips = 50M + 35M + 15M + 15M + 20M = ~135 Million trips/day
- Sanity check: Uber reported ~28M daily trips (~20% global market share) -> 28M / 0.20 = ~140M total trips
Executive estimate: ~130 to 140 Million taxi and ride-hailing trips taken globally every single day (~$1.5B daily GMV).
