Interview Questions › Guesstimate
Estimate number of petrol pumps in India
Estimate the total number of operational retail fuel stations (petrol/diesel pumps) across India.
Context
Consider national oil marketing companies (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL) and private retailers (Reliance/Jio-bp, Shell, Nayara) along national highways, state highways, and urban cities.
Clarifying questions to ask first
- Are we including private and public sector pumps?
- Does this include CNG and EV charging pumps situated within fuel stations? (Yes, all retail fuel stations).
How to approach it
- Demand-side: Vehicle Population (Two-wheelers, Passenger Cars, Commercial Trucks/Buses) × Fuel Consumption Rate
- Supply-side: Average fuel dispensing capacity per pump station per day
- Geography-side: Road network distance (National/State highways + urban density coverage)
- Reconcile against known public benchmarks (~80,000-85,000 fuel stations)
Framework: Total Fuel Stations = (Total Daily Fuel Consumed in India) / (Average Fuel Sold per Fuel Station per Day)
Sample answer
- Total on-road vehicles in India: ~250M two-wheelers, ~40M cars, ~10M commercial trucks/buses
- Total daily fuel consumed = ~350-400 Million liters/day
- Average petrol station sells ~4,500 - 5,000 liters of fuel per day
- Required stations = 400M Liters / 4,800 Liters/station = ~83,000 fuel stations
- Calculated daily demand: 380M liters/day
- Divided by average throughput of 4,600 liters/day/station
- Result = ~82,600 retail fuel stations across India
Executive estimate: ~80,000 to 85,000 operational petrol pumps in India (~88% PSU oil marketing companies, ~12% private retailers).
