Estimate daily credit card transactions in India
Estimate the total number of credit card transactions (online e-commerce + offline POS swipe/tap) processed daily in India.
Context
India has seen massive credit growth with ~95-100 million active credit cards in circulation.
Clarifying questions to ask first
- Are we counting commercial/corporate cards as well as retail consumer cards?
- Does this count failed/declined attempts or settled transactions only? (Settled transactions).
How to approach it
- Estimate Total Active Credit Cards in India (~95-100M cards)
- Calculate Active Cardholder Ratio and Average Monthly Swipes per Card (~10-12 transactions/month)
- Segment by Channel: Online E-commerce Checkouts vs Offline Point-of-Sale (POS) Swipes
- Sanity check daily volume against UPI (which does ~350M transactions/day)
Framework: Daily Transactions = (Active Credit Cards × Monthly Transactions per Card) / 30 Days
Sample answer
- Total Credit Cards in Force: ~100 Million cards
- Active card ratio: 80% (80M active cards)
- Average monthly transactions per active card: ~8 transactions/month
- Total monthly transactions = 80M × 8 = 640 Million transactions/month
- Daily transactions = 640M / 30 = ~21.3 Million transactions/day
- Step 1: 100M cards × 80% active = 80M active cards
- Step 2: 8 swipes/month = 640M monthly tx
- Step 3: 640M / 30 days = ~21.3M daily transactions (~60% online, ~40% offline POS)
Executive estimate: ~20 to 22 Million credit card transactions per day in India, generating ~$700M in daily spend (~$35 AOV).
